AMC – The Walking Dead

AMC certainly hit gold with their hit TV show The Walking Dead. There is something about zombies and people getting attacked by zombies that has the ability to garner interest from those of all walks of life. Based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman, this gritty drama portrays life in the weeks and months following a zombie apocalypse. Led by police officer Rick Grimes, his family and a group of other survivors find themselves constantly on the move in search of a safe and secure home. But the pressure each day to stay alive sends many in the group to the deepest depths of human cruelty, and Rick discovers that the overwhelming fear of the survivors can be more deadly than the zombies walking among them. It certainly has taken off more than even the most optimistic fans could have hoped.

ALL OUT WAR - RICK AND NEGAN

Everything in The Walking Dead season seven led to one major storyline: “All-Out War.” The upcoming eighth season will send Rick Grimes and his fellow survivors up against the Saviors as they try to end Negan’s reign of terror. If the story sticks to the source material from the comic book series, then it’s going to be a bloody ride and not everyone is going to make it out alive. Tune in tonight for the Season 8 premier tonight on AMC to see how it all unfolds.

While it’s exciting to see the comic’s “All Out War” storyline finally come to fruition, it was pretty unclear how long this war with Negan would last. After all, some villains stick around for what seemed like a LONG time, like the Governor; others, like Terminus, get wiped out in an episode. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Scott M. Gimple explained that, “The war will absolutely be resolved by the end of season eight. Absolutely.” So come next year The Walking Dead will take on a new set of baddies come season 9 and have to deal with more zombies to come through the spring of 2019. Let's just hope that our favorite Walking Dead characters make it out of season 8 alive.

DARYL DIXON

It wouldn't be a 3D printing post if we didn't mention something about 3dprinting that's why this one company, called 3Denovo, known for creating quite the unique pieces when it comes to 3D printing. The team at 3Denovo used their skills with ZBrush to create the intricately detailed statue of Daryl Dixon. They then painted it with acrylic colors after it was 3D printed and the results turned out quite phenomenal. Dixon’s crossbow and the base of the statue are completely removable. While the model is not “functional,” it is certainly quite the masterpiece that just about any Walking Dead fan would approve of.

“Like our other [projects], we searched for ideas from pop culture, hoping that what we [create] could be attractive to the masses. The Walking Dead was a theme [that] we couldn’t miss. For such a show, we thought the best way to maintain its visual impact was to directly print a portrait of the most recognizable characters, Daryl Dixon. The really tricky part is designing and post processing because we need certain skills to make it look real” explained Judy Tang of 3Denovo.

3Denovo has some good post processing skills because the finished 3D printed and painted bust of Daryl Dixon looks like the real deal and is perfect for any Walking Dead fanatic that wants some Walking Dead busts. Now if only we could get some of the other fan favorite characters in the show for 3D printing and with some post production painting. Maybe one day we might get a cast set of 3D printable Walking Dead figurines that we can paint and proudly display.

3D PRINTING "ZOMBIES"

Everyone loves a good zombie, don’t they? Well, maybe not everyone – I’ve known a few people whose worst fears are genuinely related to a potential zombie apocalypse. I can hardly blame them – zombies are everywhere in movies and TV these days, and thanks to top-quality special effects technologies, they’re more terrifying than ever.

SnapTank was a London-based startup dedicated to providing a library of high-quality, photorealistic 3D models for visual effects artists and studios, game designers, and anyone else who needs them. The team at the London startup also happen to be huge Walking Dead fans, so to celebrate the recent premier of the seventh season – as well as Halloween – they decided to 3D scan some zombies.

Clear Angle Studios, a team of 3D scanning specialists working out of London’s Shepperton Studios, specializes in high-definition facial and body scanning via photogrammetry, and they were glad to bring in their mobile photogrammetry rig to capture a couple of actors in full zombie mode.

Photogrammetry is also excellent for capturing texture and pattern, according to Bowler – important for translating the overall grossness of zombies into digital form. For even better effects, SnapTank then sent the virtual models to Feed Me Light, a special effects and animation studio, to put the finishing touches on the models and create a finished scene. SnapTank's own 3D prints were made in partnership with 3D printing serviceDigits2Widgets.

As you can see from the finished 3D printed zombie that they look incredible and very realistic like you are in a zombie apocalypse. It's too bad that the guys at SnapTank didn't take off it would have been awesome to see what else they came up with especially if it had anything else to do with The Walking Dead or more zombies.
